L’existentialisme est un humanisme.
L’homme “n’est d’abord rien. Il ne sera qu’ensuite, et il sera tel qu’il se sera fait”1. De là le premier principe de l’existentialisme : “l’homme n’est rien d’autre que ce qu’il se fait”.
Pour les objets c’est l’inverse. Sartre prend l’exemple du coupe papier ; il existe un concept de coupe papier qui définit une certaine utilité, une fonction précise de cet objet. C’est son essence, ce qu’il est. Cette essence précède son existence : on va construire cet objet, le faire venir à l’existence, de manière à ce qu’il réponde à cette fonction. Et il n’évoluera pas.
L’existence précède l’essence au contraire de l’animal.
